My car was in for a service at the main dealers today and after waiting at the dealership for almost four hours I eventually got to drive the car home. On the way back I noticed the plug had been pulled out of the dash cam with the wiring left hanging down the screen.
Is this normal, should they have told me, should they have reconnected the plug? I would say its far from normal!
Does the dash cam still work, is it yours or has it been swopped or have they needed to work in that area on a sensor or something?
No matter what it was, I’d want a detailed explanation from the dealer, as to why the dash cam was messed with and left how it is.
Thanks for the replies. Really appreciate the help. I find it hard to understand why they couldn’t reconnect the cable once they’d finished. Or at least let me know so I could do it myself before driving off through a busy town.

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024I’ve had many instances of dash-cam removal or disconnect, too many to mention but normally just a case of reconnecting the USB power however I have had cases where the dealer has actually broken the bracketing for the camera where they have struggled to remove it.
The dash-cam I have now is held in place by very strong magnets to a docking station and easy to remove the cam and power but even then they haven’t got the decency of putting the camera back as was after doing any work on the car so just leave it on the seat and unexpected me getting in the car and sitting on the thing lucky not breaking it.
I try to remember to take the cam down before getting out of the car at the dealership but with just about every car park space, including disabled ones, full of cars for sale I trend to forget after the faffing around.

The dash cam wasn’t working and needed to be reset before I could get it online again. I would have thought they could have either reconnected it or at least let me know so I put it back together before I drove home.

Fisherman's Friends, Glastonbury 2024I think that a chap in my village is partly responsible for dealers unplugging dash cams! He runs a chauffeur / private hire business and has a few high end Mercs. He put one of them in for service at Mercedes-Benz Bristol and when he got the car back he watched the dash cam footage.
He then posted a YouTube video of what had happened, annotated with all the things that the mechanics had done wrong on the test drive – which included speeding (multiple times), full throttle acceleration (such that the rev limiter activated) and using the car to go to the cash point (amongst other things). The video went viral and the dealership offered him a couple of grand by way of compensation and to remove the video. He got greedy and tried to sting them for substantially more (I can’t remember the full details, but his demands were totally unreasonable) and it backfired on him, as the dealership dug their heels in and eventually withdrew their original offer!
As an aside, I’ve never wanted a dash cam as I’m aware of far too many people who get one thinking that their driving is perfect, yet end up getting convicted by their own footage (which the Police can seize at an accident). My new car has something called a ‘Drive Recorder’ built in, which will automatically capture (through the 360 degree camera system) the time before, during and after an incident such as an accident or attempted theft. I’ll have to keep quiet about it if I ever cause an accident!
