Interesting email from Kerbo Charge today regading cross pavement charging.  They’ve asked me to fill in a consultation from the D.o.T.

“It might be frosty out there but this email should quickly warm you up.

The Department for Transport has announced a consultation about changing the law so that residents like you no longer need planning permission for your EV charger if you have a cross-pavement channel.

This is big news because currently you need planning permission for a charger unless you have a driveway, creating an expensive and time-consuming blocker for residents.

However this change might not happen unless without your help – we need strong evidence about the issue make the change happen”

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

@kezo  I asked Durham about those sorts of cable covers and they said no, nothing allowed on top of the footpath.

I did hear that they may be changing their mind about it though, so if they do a simple drop in place option would be easier for me than having to park in just the right distance from the kerb and bending down to feed it into the kerbocharge gully.

Also, when I start looking for cars towards the end of the year it would mean more choice instead of having to find one with the charge port in the same place as the Enyaq or having to buy a 10m or longer cable.

Its height and slope angle are below 1 inch between 2 sections of paving councils deem the height must be greater before a claim can be awarded against its uneven pavements. It also complies with sec 66 of highways act 1980. However, to stress, it is different to normal cable covers which is often much higher.

Given its not a busy walkway, would your HA know if you got one £61?

@kezo, It was a catagorical no to any form of cable cover placed on top of the footpath, but as I said I think they may have since changed their mind.

I’ll get back in touch with the chap who sorted the Kerbocharge gully for me, I don’t think it’s going to last much longer!.  Mainly, I suspect, to the way Durham installed it, from what I’ve seen when fitting into a tarmac path it should be be set in tarmac as well.  Durham have used concrete which already had to be repaired last year due to it coming away from the gully.  I think that at the time they also damaged part of the bottom of the gully so the part nearest the edge of the pavement is not 100% secure again.

If I could swap to a simple over the path cover I could leave it attached to the cable and place it anywhere on the path I needed to suit the position of the car’s charging port, and of course not have to bend down to feed in the cable!.

They have just introduced this in N.Ireland, to get the charger and the channel thing across the pavement is only £2680. A channel cut across the pavement with the plastic channel with the brush on top would cost a maximum of £100. I think they are having a laugh.

Just fitting the Kerbocharge gully into the footpath was a “bargain discounted” price of £300 from Durham Council!

The cost for the cable channel across the pavement here is £1,000.
