Hello all. Been a while since the big Kona chat, so thought I’d start another as I’m currently looking into the world of cars/Motability. Offers at the bottom. I apologise if this info is common knowledge/useless to you.

There’s a general assumption here that motability are pushing EV’s, and whilst that may be true to an extent, it’s only a tiny part of the story if any. The truth is, the government has mandated that manufacturers have 28% of sales by volume as EV’s, so when they have the quarterly meeting with motability, they are heavily discounting the EV’s, as well as pushing motability to allow more and more powerful/expensive cars. (A couple of rebuffed examples is Hyundai wanted the Ioniq AWDs on, and kia wanted the EV9) Some of the AP’s on EV’s are artificially there to discourage people from ordering that model. As that model is often just not made in any number. Ditto for some ICE.

      This means for us:

      A) We can leverage dealers for heavy EV discounts as they need to sell cars

      B) They are not particularly interested in selling ICE to us, especially if near the limits. Selling more ICE simply means they have an EV sales hole, which is why ICE are so expensive.

      C) This is the best quarter as many manufacturers are in a panic. By Q4 they will already be tabulating results and too far gone.

      D) Often if you want an ICE (also applies to retail customers) they will say they dont have any available etc or show no interest. Some dealerships are already trying to sell 100% EV.

Here are some examples of deals currently available relatively easily. I’ll post specific ones in the offers thread. You may want to negotiate yourself. I suspect you could even target the i4.

PEUGEOT, CITROENS and VAUXHALLS EVS – £1000 off [Likely up to £1500 or more as this is an open offer.] – Also £400 off ev’s at one dealer

Cupra – £1000 off [Again, more is possible. This is the only VAG car on this list. Skoda especially have no discounts.]

Nissan – up to £1000 off [Ariya specific maybe, others to be had but I’ve only investigated Ariya]

Vauxhall – Up to £600 off

Alfa Romeo – A few hundred.

Another Kona old timer returns 😂

        A) Not necessarily, they are already subsidised, but offers do occur across the board

        B) Never had a problem getting ICE and I believe there are more ICE than EV’s on the scheme

        C) I would say the beginning of Q4 they start to panic. Dealers also have to meet monthly quota’s

        D) Never had a problem – more so some dealers arent interested in Motability customers

          A) Tend to agree with @kezo There are always offers, publicised in @BigDave excellent thread, but if there was evidence of Motability customers getting ‘heavy’ discounts on top of those I suspect that we would have heard about them.

          B) The vast majority of Motability customers are still successfully ordering ICE cars, rather than EVs, which suggests that there isn’t a problem getting them.

          C) Targets can be monthly, quarterly or annually, but even the latter can be calendar year or financial year! Difficult to know how every dealer works and I think that period end deals are more common with retail, rather than Motability, customers, but anything is possible.

          D) There is some evidence of this. There was a YouTube video that someone posted on here recently where some vulnerable Motability customers were interviewed who had allowed themselves to be talked into getting EVs when it was clear that they weren’t suitable for them (no home charging etc) and they were now in some difficulty. Sadly, there are some very unscrupulous dealers out there.

To add, if you walked into say a Hyundai dealership with 10 cars on disply of which 4 of them are electric, how can the sales guy say I can’t let you order that shiny new ICE car, after all a sale is a sale and money in the sales guy’s pocket at the end of the day and he’s unlikely to want to risk a non sale because you have gone elsewhere. It might be different for scheme users, if they are gullable enough to be persuaded into something that isn’t suitable or they can’t charge at home.
