Courtesy Car during Repairs / Service?

I’m new to motability, so only have experience of courtesy cars when I owned my own car.

Are you entitled to a courtesy car, or is it up to the dealer and availability. If I am offered a courtesy car, do I have to pay for any insurance waiver?

I didn’t expect a fault to develop with less than 500 miles on the clock, so this situation has come sooner than expected. More so, as my dealer is 25 miles away.

        Hey @Doughnut

Yes you are entitled to a courtesy car. However, it is advisable to make sure you book one in good time. So if your booking a service, make sure that you book a courtesy car at the same time.

No no ins waiver that I am aware of.

It all depends in the dealership

My Superb is being collected from my house and delivered back by the dealership for its MOT.

They supplied a octavia estate PHEV when in for service

My experience has been if for service/mot then a home pick up/drop off was asked for and pre arranged

Expect to loose your car for best part of the day and yes they unplug your car cam and leave it unplugged

For reasons I will leave to your imaganation

Best clock your mileage before and after imo

For a non urgent repair a courtesy car can be requested in my case needing an automatic for my carer wife used to cause delay but this issue can often be overcome by requesting an electric courtesy car.

I’ll see how things pan out. I think next time I will pick any car as long as its within 7 miles of me. Even if that means a three wheeler.

I appear to have a knack of collecting new cars that start to fall apart with the first 500 miles, thereafter spending my days travelling back and forwards whilst repairs are attempted. Often costing me £15 each day for insurance waivers for the loan car 🙁

My dealership are 11 miles away and won’t pick up and drop off as they say it’s to far .

Be careful what you wish for. I picked a car from the garage at the top of the road, about 50 meters. I promise you not, they went bust the next day. I had to go to Carlisle, about 40 miles away. Motability can waiver going to the manufacturers garage, the local Renault garage serviced my car. Maybe because the original garage went bust.

This time round I chose to go to Carlisle, so I anticipate a day out there when the time comes.

You should never have to pay an insurance waiver.  Your Motability insurance automatically covers you to drive loan/courtesy cars under the exact same terms as your scheme car.

I’ve had three courtesy cars while my cars been serviced or fixed and from three different dealers and never paid a penny.

Only thing I would say is, arrange with the garage early so you have a suitable car. In my case I need an auto which they usually don’t have so they need time to arrange one for me.

They were quick enough to take your motorbility car order and I suspect did so without first explaning their courtesy car policy if indeed there is one and if so ask to see a copy and ask why this was not highlighted when ordering.

I would hope the dealers dedicated motorbility salesman would have been trained in such matters

Personally I would contact the dealers manager who I suspect has made up this ad hoc rule without head office approval

My arguement is fair and reasonable and one to put to motorbility if the manager fails to listen.

                        Remember as an available alternative

All electric cars are also autos and once fully charged will surfice as a courtesy car for a few days without needing to be recharged (they drive the same in fact better than ice autos)

Thanks for all the comments guys.

If I’m unable to resolve my current repair issue, I’ll look into alternative dealers and see what Motability suggest.

I’ve just been charged, from what I’m aware of, a one-off payment of £29.99 for my QQ loan car from Glyn Hopkin. I was and am somewhat confused as to why this particular dealership (or its service department) has charged me for a loaner while my Mother’s QQ has been retained for repairs. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Were they aware it was a Motability car, when you booked the QQ in for repair? Skoda tried this on with me and also wanted to charge insurance for the loan car. I told them it was a Motability car, the girl on the service desk checked her screen and appologised for the error.

Ring the service dept and tell them its a Motability car, so why the payment. Also ring Motability if you get no where.

Yes, I made it very clear when I booked the car in that it was most definitely a Motability car. Thank you for your advice Kezo, I will try this 👍🏼
