The largest delivery of cars from China has just arrived in Teesport. The vessel has 5000 cars aboard including Jaecoo, Chery various models and the first cars from Lepas, probably the L8. With these amounts of cars arriving in the UK it would be hard for Motability Operations to ignore the availability & possible discounts being offered by manufacturers. With Chinese cars already on the scheme, are we about to see a lot more?
After browsing the show rooms last week & looking at cars from Peugeot, Ford, Renault, Vauxhall & even Skoda, can they compete with the quality, price & specifications that the Chinese cars have, I don’t think so, do you?

Certainly worth popping in BYD again or phoning, if only to satisfy your own mind, cus you don’t want to be driving something too low for a length of time?

ID.7 is a bit low for me to get in and out – I need to activate the muscles I almost don’t have. But once inside it’s a different world to ID4 /ID5 and Skoda Enyaq.

Motability VW Touran Family Pack May 2019September 9, 2026 at 9:02 pm #378882I went into the Mazda dealership to see the new Mazda 6e & 6xe EV’s and it was like the Mary Celeste Ghost Ship! Not one person in there? There was a 6e in there awaiting prep & covered in dust & stuff but no 6xe. I walked about for 15 minutes, no-one!
If they want to sell cars they are going to have to make an effort!

Definately make another trip to BYD, the seating height will suit you better, as well as. more bang for your buck.

When, I looked at the CX60 there were two people that day (one not working), but the dealership is mostly run by one person, who said hi and let me know if you have any questions. I don’t think Mazda is a volume dealership in UK.
The 6e (EZ6 in China) built by Changhan who Mazda have partnership with. Seems to get decent reviews though.
September 9, 2026 at 9:23 pm #378886@kezo, I will indeed
@Solymar – CX60 was an amazing car, when not in a garage. But when we bought it in 2023 I think it was rushed to the market and has so many issues that eventually even Motability took it back on “Mechanical Grounds” without arguing. I hope it is more reliable now, but do your thorough research first.Sent from a mobile device.

September 15, 2026 at 7:30 pm #379963Wow, that is some ship! The Chinese have certainly planned their export strategy well!
Hopefully it will mean a better choice of car for scheme members if MO choose to include the new models on the scheme. Time will tell!

Looking back on S. Korea as an example, Hyundai entered the european market in 1978, with the Hyundai Pony and the Stellar in 1984. Yet, it wasn’t untill 30 years after entering the european market, Hyundai opened its Czech plant.
China tapped western markets by buying existing brands before bringing there own brands to europe from around 2020 and already, local production is growing rapidly. Within the next decade, as many as 1.5 million vehicles from Chinese brands are likely to be built in Europe annually. This year, Chinese brands like BYD, Leapmotor, and Chery are expected to manufacture approximately 90,000 of these vehicles in Europe, either in new factories or existing ones that have been underutilised (i.e Nissan Sunderland).
Many Chinese manufacturers are now building central spare parts warehouses in Europe. That clearly improves the starting point, but they are not yet decentralised or pushed to regional hubs like european rivals, parts arent being shipped in from China.
The speed of the onslaught or its infrastructure is unlike anything we saw from the Japanese in the 70’s or the Koreans in the 80’s, but they were also considered sh!t at the time and without the Chinese battery cells/modules in your Enyak, you’d be peddling it
Four of the top 10 leased cars for first half 2026 UK are Chinese, with the JakeWho 7 holding the top spot. Select car leasing figures.
In Australia 70% of recent car sales have been Chinese brands. The Australian top 10 manufacturers include 6 Chinese car companies. The others are Japanese and Korean.
Google the Atto 3 deprication after 3 years in UK and europe, it aint near 30%!
I often wonder how British Leyland would be perceived on the world stage today. Mind you the Allegro’s quartet steering wheem seems to have caught on today😂
September 28, 2026 at 1:40 pm #383845Recently collected a MG3 Hybrid. Some criticism from certain quarters was to be expected. I rather think it’s an invalid criticism ( buying Chinese cars that is). After all, most people buy through need or desire. When through need most seek value for money. This remains true whether oranges, clothes or cars. I am fussy about one area and deselect fruit from one area. This is a political choice. Declining a car from China? A personal decision, a political one or purely economic? Of course if individual choice has a macro economic effect then I’m surprised. If the huge European car manufacturers cannot compete with the Orient then that’s their problem. I seek value. And the MG3 Hybrid provides that with its summer mpg of 67.4, its very nippy engine (0-60 in 6.8sec) and its plethora of high tech safety features. Scratchy plastic can be found on the dash ( why do reviewers obsess about this?)…. My previous car, Clio Hybrid requires a £3k AP ( £500 3 yrs ago). We’re all different fortunately and Motability must continue to serve all needs. Thanks Harry
What is the MG 3 like as what car gives it and other MG bad reliability record and cars like Toyota Yaris hybrid a very good reliability record.
September 28, 2026 at 1:54 pm #383846Problem with MG they got rid of some really good family dealers and replaced them with the big Glyn Hopkins type who are diabolicle. One MG family dealer told me that MG wanter bigger type dealers and they could not do this due to cost. This dealer was my choice as they were prepared to come to my home and show me the car and wash and return car after service. But alas only Glyn hopkin is available who tell me no they do not pick up and deliver for service so I told them I will go elseware.
September 28, 2026 at 5:41 pm #383856As previously mentioned, Xpeng are now building cars in Europe, Austria to be precise. They are selling through VW dealers at the moment as VW own a small share of Xpeng. The Hull dealership JCT600 already have the signage up & cars in the showroom. Xpeng are also looking at opening their own independent Xpeng outlets!
https://carnewschina.com/2025/09/15/xpeng-begins-european-manufacturing-of-g6-g9-suvs-in-austria/
Xpeng is a Technology company first, building Robots & other advanced technology. It is owned (or was) by one man whose name is Xpeng, the company named after him. The cars have the most advanced autominous driving software in the world.
The G6 is on sale, the G9 is in production & the P7 plus is coming early 2027 along with the L03.
Coming to a showroom near you, but not necessarily on the Motability scheme, although they will find it hard to ignore!
Also keep an eye out for Zeekr, due early 2027, owned by Geely.
The last time I looked, there were 161 car companies in China, all fighting for the market & backed financially by the Chinese government!
The traditional European companies have a lot to be worried about!🤔

September 29, 2026 at 9:38 am #383871All chinese cars sold in europe and UK are looking at having some sort of “l8cal” production.
BYD have a plant possibly coming on line in Hungary [but the change in government is possibly going to stop that)
Leapmotor are to build in steloantis plant in zaragoza in Spain
MG planning plant in spain
Chery taken over nissan plant in Spain and development in uk
This isn’t new, this follows the Japanese manufacturers who moved plants to this continent due to government import controls at the time.
Be aware though, they won’t be able to have the same prices, as they will have to pay the going rate for staff
September 29, 2026 at 10:15 am #383877It will be interesting to see if there are new Manufacturers & models added to the scheme in the 4th quarter update. It may indicate the direction of travel for the scheme & especially EV’s and Hybrids. It all seems a bit quiet at the moment!
I took my Enyaq in for a service a couple of weeks ago & the sales manager said that Skoda was not necessarily focused on Motability as their Retail sales were good & they didn’t need to offer the new models or discount cars to the scheme. That’s probably why the Ap’s are going up!

September 29, 2026 at 11:18 am #383878@Sooymar, I thimk th8s is the issue for Motability. When domestic sales are poor, ir manufacturer is nit either well liked 8r unknown, they push cars and extea discounts to shift metal skoda used to have VRS models on the scheme, Superb including L&K, but if sales are good, they don’t want to reduce their profits.
It’s going to be inter3eting with the Hyundai Tucson and MG HS, both are having new facelifted xars launched, so good aps. When stock 7s used up, we will have to see if they stay l8w
Of course, one upside is sometimes to get a new car out on the streets, tgey will, for a shot period if tine, have aps discounted.
I think we saw that with the Jaecoo J7 phev, was on the scheme then removed when salesshot up
September 29, 2026 at 11:38 am #383879I think the Governments target for Motability to have 1 in every 2 cars on the scheme built in the UK by 2035 is very ambitious and only achievable if China starts building or buying UK manufacturing plants here. Value for money & price competition is going to be at the forefront, in my opinion. With so many deals & so much choice off of the scheme now, going with one of the many other leasing companies starts to look attractive.
I know this is another link but it explains a lot about the China market.
