February 8, 2019 at 6:34 pm #70186There’s a pattern forming there Chris, Kia, Vag x4, Kia……..
Was the switch to a Leon due to costs, or something else?
I had a Leon ST petrol prior to our current car, very sporty, and very fun to drive. Would have look at another if we didn’t have to switch to something higher.
I was a late learner, but was in era where most of my friends had an escort. Was a passenger in quite a few on trips to the nightclub. 2 of my friends use to play the lotto scratchcards (was when they first come out) they won the jackpot, and bought themselves matching escorts…… think that’s when i realised they weren’t so cool lol
February 8, 2019 at 6:48 pm #7018872 DudesGreat list ChrisK.
Was the 1960 Velox the USA influenced one with the curved front and rear screens?
Nevertheless, I bet the 1965 Triumph 2000 felt like a Rolls Royce in comparison – very smooth and refined with its 6 cylinder lump!

Trev, that pattern with the KIA > VAG > KIA are results of circumstances at the time with my first KIA bought because the company I worked for relocated from south Bristol to Stonehouse in Gloucestershire and I was filling the tank of my Escort Ghia with petrol every other day with the running around at work included but bought the KIA Rio because it was a cheap diesel that I only had to fill once a week.
The changing back to KIA was brought about because of the VW Touran delays in delivery.
The Seat Leon came about because I’d realised I wasn’t going to work again so less money in the pot and the AP was a couple of hundred less than the Golf and the car had more tech in it however it fell from favour because of the design of the hatch door with that big curving at the bottom of the hatch-door making it hard to put a scooter in the boot apart from that I got on just as well with the Leon as I did with the Golf, that I forgot to add to my notes, is probably the best car I’ve ever owned or least.

72Dudes, Yes the Velox did have that American spaceship sort of look about them as did many of the GM / Vauxhall cars had back then. The Triumph 2000 was like pure luxury, a luxury I couldn’t really afford at the time as I was always driving around with the fuel warning light on and this was in a time when petrol went up in price by one old penny a gallon and not one new penny a litre. LoL
I blow a piston ring in that old six cylinder job about 6 months after requiring the car and that piston blow in the middle of the old Severn Crossing bridge that was then part of the main M4 so at 70 MPH didn’t do it much good and after repairing in my own time at home it was never quite so smooth but still a nice car to drive.
Those cars way back then seem to me to be massive and had loads of room in them but a couple of years ago I was driving behind an old Triumph 2000 and it looked like a Mini Metro size wise up against my Ford Escort.
February 9, 2019 at 11:16 am #70230Cheers Chris, interesting you mention about the hatch door on the leon – when we went to test drive it, we were unsure if to get the hatch or estate, and if to get diesel or petrol.
The dealership gave us extended unassisted test drives in a petrol hatch, and a diesel estate. I was surprised as how little difference is driving, parking, and vision there was between the hatch and estate, and what sold us on the estate is that the boot floor was adjustable and could be raised level with the lip – eliminating the problem you describe. So we ended up with a petrol estate.. what’s more at the time, it was zero AP, and didn’t even take my wife’s full allowance!
I agree it was a fantastic fun car to drive.
February 23, 2019 at 4:29 am #71150Austin Maestro – mother gave me this when my parents decided they didn’t need 2 cars any more
Peugeot 106 1.5D – first car I bought – thing went forever on a whiff of diesel
Toyota Corolla 1.3 Petrol – Never had a problem with this – sold it to my mother (for half of it’s value before anyone comments about her giving me the first car lol) in the end when I needed something bigger.
Peugeot 306SW 1.9D – Zero power but it was absolutely unstoppable in the snow – I’ve never driven anything before or since which could handle the slippy stuff as well, and my current car is AWD!
Peugeot 407SW 2.0HDi – loved this car but towards the end the maintenance bills were starting to pile up and I was sick of replacing ABS sensors on it.
Volvo XC60 D4 AWD – current motability car – can’t really complain about it but I do wish I’d gotten something different and will be glad to see the back of it (and the 28mpg I’m averaging) at the end of this year…."Man is born in freedom, but he soon becomes a slave, in cages of convention, from the cradle, to the grave."

March 23, 2019 at 11:06 am #73049Wow earnie64, looking at that fine list makes me think you could have been a dealer in the past. ?
I have my list in here somewhere but never listed the company vans I had because they bring tears to my eye’s to this day when I think of the Ford Escort vans that drove 70,000 miles in a little over 2 years with no problems then the company got a good deal on Morris Mariner vans that I drove brand new out of the dealers to a petrol station 3 miles down the road to find the fuel gauged not working and in less than a week, speedo stopped working and so it went on. ?
March 23, 2019 at 11:57 am #73052No, certainly not a dealer, in recent years a lot have been second and even third cars but just have the Countryman and Lexus RX now plus a nice maxi scooter(yamaha x-Max 300)for a bit of fun.
i know what you mean about Marinas my brother bought a new one back in the day and it was awful, but my dads Austin 1100 was a great car and we all learned to drive in it.
