Cancelled car and buying privately!

So disappointed with the lack of EV’s or reasonably priced PHEV’s with a usable range I am buying a car of my own until a decent BEV becomes available. I am fed up of hoping that one will come up on the scheme. Last week I ordered and then cancelled a Hybrid. I thought NO!

I am doing this in protest.

I will keep my £9k for the next 3 years.

I will not be leasing a “FREE” car as they called it at Mitsubishi when they told me that electricity is NOT the future. Fed of up of feeling second class and only being offered vehicles they can not shift. NO!

Rant over, viewing a lovely Sports coupe this evening.?

I was driving back from bath the other day and came across a garage specialising in second hand EV, may be of interest to some including @Brydo. Mortgages are required for some, but it goes to show a second hand market is becoming available.

Very interesting JS, was just reading their claims that the battery will last between 10-20 year, as that was my 1st concern with a 2nd hand ev. Does the battery need replacing, but obviously not.

I do like the e-golf advertised just because it looks like a normal golf.

Drove behind an i8 last week…. is that the sport coupe you’re looking at @shawn ???

I was all set to buy an electric car last August. I test drove a Peugeot  iOn 2011 but just before I went to get it I had them scan the battery and tell me its AH. They could not tell me it SOH(state of health) or didn’t want to to tell me but I managed to work the SOH out from the AH. It was 72% when end of life was considered to be 70%. So I did not get it.

I test drove 2 Nissan Leafs and they are nice. BUT as I was buying at the bottom end of the market I discovered that the early 2011-12 models with the light interior from Japan have inferior battery technology and a resistance type heater so I did not want one of them. So then I could afford a 2013-14 but being the end of the season and me not wanting to travel there was nothing for me.

Fast-forward to now and those 2013-14 cars last year were £8.5K are now £9.5K. They have gone up a grand so I now won’t pay that. Then the last 3 months I thought I would come back to Motability and get a new one.

Hence the deep disappointment and resentment I feel.

Plus snarky remarks from salesmen and the fact that they don’t speak to me when I’m in my wheelchair but talk to my wife like I am not there means I am having to buy private and wait………

Thanks for that JS I am looking for a second hand EV for my son. He has the bug and wants to trade in his Audi A5 which is a beautiful looking car.

I wish!? No its an Astra GTC 2.0 diesel auto. Its a lot like my TDi I have now that I only fill up 8 times a year. Petrol stations are a struggle for me so I don’t go out much. An EV will transform my life when I get one.

                If I live long enough!?

Shawn due to the small numbers of new EV’s available and demand increasing I think the second hand market will become more popular and hence prices will go up.

Well lets just hope the motability pull their trousers up and start offering more ev’s, an increased percentage that reflects with the real world out there.

I do wonder how some dealers will cope selling ev’s, it’s not like some of them have perfected the selling of fossil fuel cars yet!!

Trev I have given motability a harder time than most with regard to EV’s but I do believe in this instance they have no power. You just have to look at the high APs charged on the BEVs on the scheme to understand that, at this point in time, the manufacturers don’t need motability sales.

Valid point Brydo, but motability have a duty to promote and provide environment friendly transport options. And they have the funds to supplement this. It can’t go wholly on the manufacturers shoulders. A grant like the government ran would be affordable for the scheme to implement, they could even better it if they wanted to.

Sick and tired of motability blaming manufacturers, and manufacturers blaming motability. Give the people what they want!

Trev ideally that would be the case and as we know the leaf was on previously, but that was when few were interested in EV’s. Now there is a demand it appears motability can’t, or are unwilling to, pay what manufacturers want for their cars.

I think Nissan have realised they are loosing too much money on BEV’s.

For example, people were buying old Leafs with end of life batteries and then for £5K getting a new pack put in. This pack is now £8K because they realised people were getting a brand new car almost.

The old Leaf was around £25K but the new one Is around £40K. Its the same car with a bigger battery in a “Shell suit”?

Currently there is nothing worth having everything is “Next year”.

The Smarts are available because they are ugly and impractical and the Zoe is available because they depreciate massively.Last August I could have got a 2015 plate Zoe for £6k but like everyone else was put off with that battery lease and the prospect of having a broken one on my drive costing me £49 a month with no way out.

But the thing is now I have driven an electric car I am a little bit broken,ICE cars are just horrible compared. When I nearly bought the Hybrid it was great going slow on electric but when the engine cut in my heart sank.?

Then there’s the other side of the EV Motability story with Motability being a good dumping ground for diesel and petrol cars so no incentives for manufacturers.

The best we can hope for with all the anti global hippies blocking roads and the government needing to look like their doing something is to reintroducing incentives for hybrid and EV’s so making AP’s a bit lower.

Chris that may come back but I doubt it, at present its the number of EV’s available that’s the problem not the price. Most EV manufacturers have a waiting list for BEVs and that includes high end Tesla.

Shawn, surely the £49 lease cost covers broken batteries?? Isn’t it effectively insurance to give peace of mind? A used Zoe appears to be a bargain, though I would say a Renault Fluence can be had for £2k but not sure why…?

Shawn I feel your pain about the scheme I have been pestering them for years about putting EV’s on the scheme. Maybe you should stick with motability for the next three years and see what comes on.

We have extended for two years with that thought in mind, if there are no BEVs on by then we will buy privately.

The battery is covered but the Battery Management System isn’t or the motor, they would be your problem and cost thousands.

I have not had a Motability car for 20 years, I had a bad experience with a dealer I saw as blaming shoddy work on me. Two patches of paint had jumped off the car on both sides in the same place above the wheel arch which I knew as an engineer was probably down to oil on an assembly robot. They wanted to charge the Motability insurance £500 for this. I fixed it myself for £20.

Since then I have not had a “FREE” car. But had close to £60K instead. I have been getting around in a Porsche 924,Rover 25,Peugeot 306, Nissan Micra,Rover 75,and a Ford Focus 2.0TDi Titanium. Total cost for all those cars was around £2K in 20 years in depreciation. Plus insurance and MOT’s, plus probably 4 tyres and two exhausts. The Porsche paid me to keep it for 3 years?Never spent a penny on the Micra,Rover 25, or the Focus.

But I am ready to give up motoring now and drive around in an electric washing machine?

So when one does become available I won’t be mid contract and will just get one.

I think a lot of us would love to save the money but don’t want the added stress of dealing with breakdowns etc, unless your someone who still has the ability and know how of what to do if you break down in winter with a car full of family and the dog etc.

I know we should get priority and if needed a hire car like for like.

Plus my 25 year old daughter insured for free and my boy added for less then £20. When I’m too unwell to drive.

But I do agree the lack of big and long range cars is terrible, considering the money motorbility has.

Well I went to see the GTC last night and it was a nice enough car but was a really firm ride with a noisier than mine diesel engine. Then I thought what am I doing buying something I don’t want, I want electric.?

So keeping my 10 year old car for the time being.

But I thought I would have some fun today.

Called a Renault dealer to book an extended test drive in an electric ZOE. No one to speak to me,call back in an hour. I could not get a test drive in an electric Smart car and I am now wondering if this will be the same.? Will be fun trying though I love causing trouble.?

Just rough calculated the numbers on the Zoe. Its a £21K car minus VAT £4K minus AP of £4K minus Motability of £9K =£4K mmmmmmmm! With no lease on the battery I suspect that car will be worth £10K at the end of lease.
