Broadband woes

About 4 months ago Openreach’s contractors came around digging up the paths in our estate.  Laying fibre connections they were with the intent that we’ll soon have the ability to have cheaper broadband connections at higher speeds that the current fibre to the box 63mB we have.

So, watching all the comparison sites with interest I wait until boom! We get the ability to order up to 900mbs which I promptly do through PlusNet, given their reputation for good customer service I though this should be simple, get the contractors back to dig a trench to our front wall, lay the cable and add the required box.  However Openreach and/or Plusnet have successfully failed to get an install done. We’ve had several engineer visits, including ones that apparently couldn’t gain access to our front garden, despite it’s aging wooden fence and missing gate, essentially there’s nothing preventing anyone accessing the front door.

Anyhow, my patience expired after 3 months of excuses from either one of the companies involved.  Openreach doing what they have to and then I get a notification that they can’t proceed, Plusnet then have extensive communications with Openreach and, apparently, there’s a problem getting permissions or access.  From my point of view, I grab the engineers every time I see them visiting and they’ve all got the same response and blame the provider (Plusnet) while every communication cheerfully blames Openreach.

Having cancelled I’ve now tried to reorder through someone else, in the hope that I can get them to get the job done with less grief.  However, all searches on the post code return the hybrid fibre options.  I can’t contact Openreach to find out what’s going on, so I thought I’d rant here.

With everything else that’s going on, this was supposed to be a simple improvement to our lives…

I used Plusnet a few years back, I ran a business and did a fair bit of work from home so needed the connection, they agreed a transfer date, Sky was switched off and Plusnet were not ready, went 3 days with no internet.

BT Group owns several internet-related companies, EE, Plusnet Openreach EE, Openreach (BT Group also has a significant stake in Bharti Enterprises), so stay clear of these if Plusnet were no good.

Openreach Fibre checker will other companies lease their lines.

ISPreview is a good source of information (might need to search through)

May I recommend Zen internet. while not cheap, £50 for 900MB which I have is excellent. No yearly price increase, Top rater customer service and tech support.

We changed over from BT to EE January this year, approximately 2 years ago BT pushed us into going fibre optic, the old system was ok with the odd problem, since changing to optic fibre it has been rubbish, the speed is slow and buffets, It is better with EE but nothing special.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
