I’m really struggling to find my next vehicle on the scheme so I am now looking at possibly buying privately but I would need any car I buy to have a boot hoist. Do I or Motability own the hoist in my current lease car and if it’s me, can I then get my vehicle adapter to remove the hoist from my current car and install it into the new car I buy?

Also, if I can do that, has anyone else done it and if so, could I ask roughly what it cost?

Lastly, if I can’t use the hoist in my existing car, does anyone have a clue how much a new hoist might cost me with fitting?

The hoist belongs to motability and you can’t buy it.

Actually, I’m not sure that’s true.

I asked Motability about the hoists (person and boot) in our current lease car:

“Just out of interest, what will happen to the hoists we will be returning with the Volkswagen Tiguan as and when a replacement car with new adaptations is delivered?  Are they scrapped or re-used by Motability or the adaptation specialist?  It would seem a shame not to re-cycle them, given their ‘as new’ condition”

I got the following reply:

“I can confirm that when your Tiguan is returned, it will then be sold on with all adaptations still in tact, therefore we hope that someone else will benefit from them. The only time they may be removed from the vehicle would be if they are no longer safe to use. Alternatively, you and your wife are able to have them removed them from the vehicle, should you wish to use or sell them, however you would be responsible for any costs to do this“

Mind you, so much has changed with Motability rules recently such as not being able to buy the car at the end of the lease and restrictions on lease extensions that it would be worthwhile double checking with them to be sure this is still allowed

I had to pay for the hoist installation when it was done, although I believe this is a subsidised price from Motability. I guess I will just have to aske them.

When the cars are returned they go to be checked out by a fleet solutions company and I can tell you that all the hoists etc are skipped.  I know this because my son used to remove them as part of his job.

I have removed a few for people about to return their car.

Made sure all modified bits of trim etc were replaced (mostly used parts from breakers).

Takes an hour or two depending on hoist/vehicle and they were going to have them fitted to a private vehicle and most were going in a second car so they would have two cars with a hoist when their new lease arrived.

All stated that Motability had given permission so long as the vehicle was returned to factory spec and none had been charged for the hoist.

if you pay to remove it and make car like it was without one its yours afaik. but you need to check that there is a reinstallation kit available and it will fit new car. very rare for motability to fit your old one to one of their new cars. they claim after 3 years they wouldn’t be safe

This question is asked from time to time, the last time it was asked I was warned I’d lose my GCB if I were to remove the hoist I had in my car then and said then I’d come back here and tell everyone the outcome however I can’t find that thread now so here is my late thoughts.

Well I can assure you there will be no come back from Motability if you remove the hoist. I got my grandson to remove my Autochair hoist 6 months before the car went back because I was experimenting with loading a folding scooter into the car before I ordered a new, smaller car wth no need of a hoist.

If you look on Ebay there is always second-hand boot hoists for sale or even given away and guess where most, if not all come from.

I took MY hoist out of the car simply because MB upped the price of the hoist from just under £300 to over £600 so thought if there going to take advantage of disabled folk who need disabled equipment in there cars I’m not letting it go to some installer who will no doubt charge a kings ransom to put it in a non MB disabled person car.

What was there reply? With all the different replies it would be good to here Motabilities latest say on it.

The cars that goes to Auction that  have adaptions the Auction houses removes them and say in the description example hoist removed along with pics of cut outs in the boot panel that was made when installing the hoist.

And then gets disposed of.

I have emailed Motability rather than call them as I thought I would like to get any reply in writing, but as yet I have received no reply. As soon as I hear back I will update.

For a boot scooter I use this, no fittings, no ownership disputes , but it does need to be lifted in & out!
