The new lower powered iX1 that I mentioned previously in other threads has now appeared on BMWs website. It’s priced from £45,465 so well below the price of many other EVs on the Motability scheme and likely to retain a greater proportion of its value after 3 years than many of them. It’s 204 bhp with a range of 275-293 miles.
Whilst the ICE versions of the conventional X1 are extremely popular with private buyers, as has been widely reported only 7-8% of EV sales are going to private buyers. Whilst I suspect that this take up will be higher with this new lower priced iX1, BMW will still be relying heavily on lease customers to shift them in quantity. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this come on to Motability next year.

I popped into my local BMW dealer on Monday, just to look at the 2 series active tourer M Sport 225. Not as I can really see myself in an MPV ? but, I thought I’d have a look given I was close by. Sadly there wasn’t one in stock so looked at bot the X1 and iX1. The interiors were near identical with the loss of the idrive controller, in favour of a mostly touchscreen apprroach. call me cynical but most would say this is a backwards step for the marque. The active tourer also had the same layout, however the screens were nice. A quick look in the X3 and M3 was a more traditional dashboard layout, with the idrive wheel still in situ. The i4 had the new screens layout but still retained the idrive wheel, as did the rest of the 2 series.
More importantly what the fook are BMW doing with the baby X1?
October 4, 2023 at 12:34 pm #236347It’s a shame that BMW are keeping the idrive controller from the cheap end of the range, it really was their usp
"Come on BYD Seal!"October 4, 2023 at 1:36 pm #236362I really hope this appears on the scheme, this would definitely tempt me back to the scheme.
Fingers crossed ???

You may recall that I had the more powerful iX1 30 for a day recently and I wasn’t impressed. It was the first EV I had driven and I absolutely hated the fact that it felt like you were braking when you took your foot off the accelerator. Maybe that feature can be turned off? I didn’t check. Yes it was fast but, like all EVs, if you drive it fast the range plummets. It was also no quieter on the road than our petrol X1 (admittedly the engine in ours is whisper quiet).
I completely agree that the removal of the iDrive rotary controller is a massive retrograde step. BMWs iDrive is universally regarded as the best infotainment system on the market and one of the reasons for that is the rotary controller, which is significantly safer than touchscreen when on the move. All 1 and 2 Series variants are losing the rotary controller. Very bad move. Also, all BMWs are losing the ‘favourites’ buttons which I use all the time. They are absolutely brilliant and I don’t know why more manufacturers don’t use them. Thankfully the BMW Voice Control is faultless (unlike others I’ve used), so I guess people will have to get used to using that all the time.
In all honesty, the only area where I felt that it was better than our current X1 was the fact that it now has AutoHold. Over 2 years into our current X1’s ownership, the absence of AutoHold still irritates me. Thankfully, it’s the only thing that I don’t like about the car. I’d just prefer something a bit bigger – like the X3.
October 4, 2023 at 5:02 pm #236396Yes, the level of regen braking can be adjusted, some like the one pedal driving, others prefer the use of traditional braking, at least we have a choice.

Thanks. I appreciate that it helps range, but I hated it, so it’s good that it can be turned off.
October 5, 2023 at 6:42 pm #236610I’m not sure GG it has the ability to sound like my German made washing machine’s spin cycle?
October 5, 2023 at 8:36 pm #236620@kezo The model in that review is the higher powered 30e. That’s the model that I test drove for a day and put a review on here about. The one I had didn’t make those artificial noises when accelerating, so it can obviously be turned off! It was also a horrible green colour with the garish blue flashes, which clashed with it, so I really didn’t like the look of it. I have to say that the grey ones in that review (without blue flashes) looks ten times better and, in fact, I’d go so far as to say that I like the look of it. I would much prefer a petrol X1 over an electric iX1, but doubt that the former will appear on the scheme.
October 5, 2023 at 9:43 pm #236622Looking at iX it looks near identical X1 apart from the power source of course. When I was looking at the outlier Active Tourer reviews I noticed it had the same suounds or at least by name as part of the drive modes which aren’t my cuppa tea TBH.
Its a shame my only local BMW didn’t have an Active Tourer in the showroom the reason I was told is they sell like hot cakes. Whether I believe that is a differnt opinion. I guess it would be too small even if I could imagine myself in a MPV, although the M Sport looked the job. They are available in 245bhp (on the scheme) or 3206bhp (sadly not on the scheme)
Here’s my thinking at the moment. Do I try going electric because the sh!t all else on the scheme, especially as my daughters award only has 2yrs left although i guess it will be renewed or do I cut my loses and leave the scheme now and keep my current car or p-x?

Very much the same here. Not keen on an MPV and don’t really want an EV, but if we stay with Motability there’s very little else at the upper end of what’s available. If I could see that things were improving I might have more optimism that we will be able to stay with Motability, but all the decent additions for the last few months have been EVs and I can’t see that changing any time soon.
