The plug-in hybrid BMW 225xe Active Tourer has received a raft of powertrain updates

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has received a number of updates aimed at improving its efficiency and performance.

With a new 10kWh battery occupying the same dimensions as the previous 7.7kWh unit, BMW claims zero-emissions range has increased by 25% to 31 miles from a single charge.

Using one of the company’s home wallboxes, a full top-up should take three hours and 15 minutes. This rises to five hours from a standard three-pin socket.

Fuel economy is rated between 149 and 166mpg, though you’re unlikely to hit such figures in the real world without regular running on battery power alone. Meanwhile, official CO2 emissions range between 38 and 42g/km.

An electric motor on the rear axle gives the 225xe permanent all-wheel drive, with a combined output from that and the 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine of 221bhp propelling the plug-in hybrid – through a six-speed automatic gearbox – from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds.

The top speed is given as 126mph, while the MPV is capable of reaching 81mph in electric-only mode.

Drivers have the choice of three driving modes: Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro. There’s also an eDrive button, which allows you to fully deploy, conserve or automatically make the most efficient use of, the battery.

In the latter setting, the 2 Series Active Tourer takes sat nav and route data into account in order to save the battery for optimum times.

The battery is located under the rear seat, and while BMW says the 225xe is “slightly limited” compared to non-plug-in-hybrid versions of the car, boot space is 400 litres. With the rear seats folded down, luggage capacity rises to 1,350 litres.

Available in Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport trims, the 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. Sat nav and automatic air-conditioning are both included as standard, with remote pre-conditioning possible using the BMW Connected smartphone app.
