Hi,

Does anyone know if Motability have also paused the black box which doesn’t need connecting to a phone which is different to the drive smart .

Or have they scrapped all forms of tracking devices for now?.

The black box, is less likely to report errors and is not included, as far as I’m aware.

The black box is fitted by manufacturers, as per EU regulation, nit motability and has been fitted for a few years now

The black box installed by insurance companies is literally fitted to the car as an aftermarket fit, whereas the one that will be compulsory from July 2024 is 100% integrated into the car. It is therefore neither installed nor uninstalled, and can never be deactivated. From the outset, it is an integral part of the car.

As the official EU document states, it is a “system whose sole purpose is to record and store critical parameters and information relating to the accident just before, during and immediately after the collision” and will guarantee anonymity, which is very different to an insurance black box.
