The Kia PV 5 electric van is very affordable, they can be had 1 year old for £25k. A few people on YouTube have already converted them, some basic and some full on conversions. Ice wise Sprinter and Transit custom are also popular.
September 12, 2026 at 10:27 am #379000Any of the van based MPVs and the Dacia Jogger with the optional Sleep Pack which includes a folding bed frame and mattress that sits in the boot behind the second row and then folds across the length of the boot with all seats down.
September 12, 2026 at 5:52 pm #379015Another option is http://www.apachetrailers.co.uk
Apache Trailers in Bromsgrove offer a 8 foot by 5 foot “cube camping trailer” for £5275.25 inc vat. This provides an insulated aluminium body trailer with a rear door, side door and two windows in a choice of two body shapes (box shape or streamlined shape).
It is just a metal tent on wheels which is ideal for conversion.
The company also offer 9 foot and 10 foot trailers so they might agree to make a longer version (they do promise to be flexible).
The box shape option includes an additional frame for roof attachments (bike rack, box tent, ladders etc). If you do not want this frame, you could request a £399 discount. I suspect you could get a further discount if you did not want the insulation.

September 14, 2026 at 10:28 am #379201Isabella manufactures a Camplete trailer tent extremely popular in the EU and very well made lightweight and easily erected, Isabella have comprehensive spares.
You are looking around £3000 to £5000 for a really good second hand example.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
September 15, 2026 at 3:34 am #379482Not quite sure if we’re talking Mota-Vehicle or generally.
If we’re talking generally, then obviously, Ford Nugget and VW California. There’s a reason they’re the most popular camper vans out there – in part because they work, but also, because they still are functionally usable as a car.
Had a big camper on rent for a week, they’re really only good to drive to the motorway and the camping grounds – whereas a California/Nugget works inside towns, too. For road tripping, they’re vastly superior to large RVs and towed campers.

September 17, 2026 at 9:31 am #380893Well, the main issue here is that you’re not allowed to modify anything on the cars, so technically, you’d probably be best off with a towing vehicle and getting a towed camper.
The only real “pre-designed” option on the scheme as far as i know is the aforementioned Jogger with camping pack (which is an optional extra, north of £2000).
Otherwise, sort the search on Motability by “MPV”, there are a few technically large enough to fit an air mattress in the rear. Citroen Space Tourer for example. None of them are really what i’d consider cheap though, or even good value.
The PV5 may be great, but i’ll be honest, for road tripping, i wouldn’t necessarily want an EV.
Space Tourer, Ford Grand Tourneo, VW Caddy Maxi, those three would be the closest you can use as an actual camper van without modifications (Caddy Maxi has a dedicated £80 air mattress on Amazon for example). Combined with a jetboil or another gas hob of your choice, bit of folding chairs/table, and it’s a reasonable road trip/sleeping setup – the main issue remains though that all of them are pretty expensive in terms of AP.
