my motability car failed mot due to faulty rear seatbelts with bent buckles, which astonished me as i have never had anyone in the back of my car to use them. They must have always been faulty. its not something that you tend to check when you pickup a new car. motability say it is not covered and i have been given a £500.00 bill to repair a problem that the car must have always had, so be aware ppl and check all the seat belts when you pickup a new car. MOTABILITY states You do not need to pay for repairs or servicing needed due to everyday use, but you will have to pay for repairs needed for cosmetic damage.

But surely they would have checked the seat belt as part of the annual service ?
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
April 13, 2026 at 6:44 pm #353166If they where faulty from factory, surely they would have been picked up as faulty by the PDI done by the dealership ?
April 13, 2026 at 7:02 pm #353167Do you mean the seatbelt tongue or the buckle (receiver)?
Who carried out the MOT?
Either way, I wouldn’t be handing over money without proof and then I’d argue if no one has ever used the rear seats.
April 13, 2026 at 7:03 pm #353168I’d be arguing with the manufacturer, what model is it?
Enyaq EV
April 13, 2026 at 7:19 pm #353170I wouldn’t be paying a penny if it was me – not a chance.
Either someone somewhere hasn’t done their job or it’s a parts failure.
April 13, 2026 at 8:34 pm #353173than i will go to the garage and look at the car as no one has ever sat in the back so seat belts have never been used. i have a hammock and throws for my dog whc is a frenchie so i cant imagine that he buckled them. its been a nightmare trying to sort out when trying to phone to sort out. all the options push buttons kept taking me back to the start and it was very very stressful. the whole thing makes no sense. the garage said they had been in touch with mobilty and a courtesy car was arranged and i was at the garage for over 7hrs while it was supposed to be sorted and for a week i heard no more so obviously thought it was being repaired. then i got a strange text saying they ere waiting for my approval for repair or car hire. absolute nightmare over 2 hrs on phone on hold and being passed here and there. still very stressed and confused to it all and now wondering if i will get a bill for the courtesy car. very depressed by the whole thing
April 13, 2026 at 8:46 pm #353175Take the car to the main dealer and ask them what is the problem with the seatbelts.
April 13, 2026 at 8:54 pm #353179the car hyundai bayon is at the main dealers and thats where all the problems started

Email andrewmiller@motabilityoperations.co.uk explain that no one has ever sat in the back seats, so if faulty they have been since taking delivery and that you are not excepting any liability for something that has no been caused by you.
April 13, 2026 at 11:11 pm #353188Hyundai have just today recalled 300,000 cars in the US due to dodgy seatbelts.
Now I realise it’s America… and they’re front seatbelts, not rear… and the Bayon isn’t mentioned as a model affected… but it just goes to show that these things happen. And who knows – maybe your Bayon ‘might’ be affected – it’s just that no one in the UK has reported a problem yet? For instance ; you would never have known if the MOT garage hadn’t pointed it out! And perhaps Hyundai’s seatbelts are sourced from the same manufacturer?
Just a thought. Here’s the article:

April 14, 2026 at 6:02 am #353190many thanx solent60 will look into this today. am going to garage to see what probs are as i have now had an email saying the offside and nearside rear seatbelts are both jammed with bent buckles and as no one has ever sat in the rear of the car apart from my frenchie is very puzzling to say the least. each time i hear from them thers something new. it starte with one rear seat belt now heres the latest two rear seat belts care both jammed. makes no sense how can they be jammed when they have never been used

April 14, 2026 at 8:41 am #353196As part of the MOT they would have checked the operation of the seat belts , how do they know if they are bent, if they stuck. Sounds like the mechanism has failed.

April 14, 2026 at 2:42 pm #353253i have been onto motability today and was transfferred to clare in claims and after explaining she said she was going to speak with an assessor ? after 15 mins of holdig motability came back on the line and it was a different person who i had to explain all to again. after another 15min hold she said ahe would transfer me back to motability as she didnt know which clare i had been sp-eaking to and had no way of finding out as there was nothing on my record. During the hold again nearly 30 mins a recorded voice kept coming on and saying have you been to your online account, which i had told them on previous times that im not pclit and dont understand it. it then seemed i was put on a loop and the phone would ring every five ten mins and then the same recorded voice would come on about online, and now its nearly an hour gone by so i hung up as i suffer from heart probs and was getting palpitations and feeling clammy like when i had 2 heart attacks. the whole thing stinks. this is day 3 of spending hrs on bphone and getting nowhere. the prob seems to be with the motability ins claims dept. how the hell ppl like that sleep at night is beyond me. its unbeleivable how it has changed, ppl used to be so helpful

Aso see my post @9:15pm yesterday
April 14, 2026 at 10:36 pm #353289My thinking is if a seat belt clasp bends that easily then its not fit for purpose.
This of course does not apply if you have had an Elephant sitting in the back seats.

What annual service? My first service is 20k there is nothing annually. 20k miles or 2 years.
As for OP insurance claim as damage? Save you money.

Just to confirm, you don’t have to foot the costs?
April 16, 2026 at 12:38 pm #353446I’m very glad you’re sorted just for people’s fyi
British seat belt buckles are built to withstand 15,000 Newtons of force that’s 1.5 tons. Who is putting that much pressure in the back of a little Hyundai FFS, I doubt it’s even physically possible to damage both like that I have my doubts it’s physically possible.
I wonder if this is a scam to tap up Motability cos they’ll just authorise it no harm right? Maybe MB should be looking at whether they’re getting fraudulent garage claims.
It’s honestly seems to be at the point we need to photograph every bit of the car before a garage gets it just in case. Also highlights how poor MB customer service really is now too.
Hope it’s all sorted at no cost
