I know a few people on here have considered purchasing a used vehicle rather than leasing. I found this auction site which seems to be where Motability are selling off returned vehicles. The only catch is it says trade only.

I wouldn’t have a used Motability car with the way they penny pinch when it comes to the service schedules and allowing cars to do 30k+ without even an oil change.
September 16, 2020 at 12:17 pm #12391272 dudesYep, you may end up with one previously owned by Rox 😆
September 16, 2020 at 12:30 pm #123914I would buy ours if it was cheap enough, but the prices these fetch is more then I’d be prepared to pay.
We have a dealer near us that specialise in ex motability cars and the screen prices are always top money.
with a big one owner sign in the window.
They really do shift some stock too so it doesn’t put people of buying them.September 16, 2020 at 1:53 pm #123924Yep, you may end up with one previously owned by Rox
True I wouln’t buy it.. Had a letter from national mileage registar last week, someone gonna get an auto thats gonna cost them, Had one full service in 3 years as well.. 2 oil changes and 1st one they put that longlife stuff after 10k the oil light came on and it was empty and burnt on the dip stick they filled it agaim. maybe vw didn’t put longlife oil in it..
September 16, 2020 at 2:21 pm #123921An awful lot of ex-Motability vehicles go via British Car Auctions various sites across the UK. They have ex-Motability sales a few times per week:
https://www.bca.co.uk/buy/useful-information/types-of-auction/motability/
To bid, you have to hold a ‘MY BCA Silver Card’ which is only obtainable after you have bought 3 vehicles from them and ‘upgraded’ from their blue card:

September 16, 2020 at 3:43 pm #123957simplemanId stay well clear of any mobility car unless you no it. They are not maintained as a new car should be. Mine has done almost 30k and its not yet had an oil change, the dealership says its not needed with the new oils, maybe thats right im not sure. If id paid 30k for a new car i would want it checked over every year, just for peace of mind. Oh i do go on sorry !
September 16, 2020 at 3:50 pm #123958alan1302Is the cars usual oil change at 30,000 miles? Thought Motability just followed the manufacturers gidelines for servicing?
September 16, 2020 at 3:52 pm #123959TheSUVGuy<p style=”text-align: left;”>There’s also a auction at westbury, Can’t remember the name now but it’s a green logo, they’ve got loads</p>
September 16, 2020 at 3:58 pm #123961Terry MartinDon’t seem to anymore, My Seat Leon was due it’s first yearly service and they phoned me to book it in. When they asked how you normally pay for the service I said It’s a mobility car, So they said in that case It doesn’t need a service until It’s 18 months old.

lol. A classic case of fleecing the private purchaser!
September 16, 2020 at 4:43 pm #123975My own cars I service every 6,000 miles/12 months whichever comes first, every 12k they get fuel & cabin filters as well, it never costs that much and I find they always run sweet and do seem to give better performance/economy than the suggested figures plus hardly any mechanical maintenance.
Treat them well and they’ll last.
September 16, 2020 at 5:22 pm #123983Belfast4Their is no way a car belonging to any lease company would be allowed to travel 30,000 miles and not have an oil change. No cars have that mileage between service.
September 16, 2020 at 5:49 pm #123985Dave G@Rox, did you have a VW vehicle? I’m currently in my last 2 months of my 3 year lease Rox and my god it has been a nightmare. For a good 1 and a half years I have been warning the dealership that the timing belt is making weird noises upon start up and they simply denied it and guess what happens last month after 1 and a half year later? The oil temperature on my vehicle is over heating whilst driving down the dual carriageway and the vehicle suddenly warns me to stop! I was nearly in a accident as a bus was also approaching the slip road. Took it to the dealership to only be told the cambelt and water coolant need replacing, absolute joke! Service advisor turned around and said I was right after all. They’re upto something these dealership mechanics are. Very fishy lot and overpriced frauds!
The worst thing is, the vehicle’s reverse brakes are now making a loud trumpet noise upon reverse parking and don’t even get me started on that. The vehicle is only on 20K! Hoping my next vehicle does not cause any problems and it definitely won’t be a VW!
September 16, 2020 at 7:28 pm #123996Their is no way a car belonging to any lease company would be allowed to travel 30,000 miles and not have an oil change. No cars have that mileage between service.
My Alhambra had it’s first service @ 13,000 miles, it didn’t get another service until the end of year three @ 43,ooo miles, I contacted Motability and they said to speak to the dealer, the dealer said it was on a long life schedule and didn’t need it until year three.
The gearbox started playing up around 8,000 miles (DSG, all it needed was an oil change to fix as was well reported all over the web), same story, didn’t get done until 43,000, miles (it fixed it instantly).
Don’t believe all the fluff they put on their website as they mostly just look at cost and save the pennies.
September 16, 2020 at 7:47 pm #123998Craig TI’ve always had my VW’s on the scheme serviced around 18k miles. I even got my Polo in 2009 serviced twice.
September 16, 2020 at 7:57 pm #124000Belfast4The dealer knows they only get a certain amount of money from Motability for servicing, if I had a car from them it would be serviced when the manufacturer said it needed done, not when the dealer decided.
September 16, 2020 at 7:59 pm #124001AzzyMy car has the inspection and service warning on, it went in for mot in August (3yrs) and Seat contacted me saying Motability said don’t do it as the lease is going back soon
September 16, 2020 at 8:09 pm #124004@Dave G Indeed i had a mk7 Golf 1.6 tdi dsg.
I did 10k well before the 1st year was up and it had a mini service.
Cars gone now so don’t have the info at hand but they did checks on it and changed the oil.
Then it was when it hit 30k or 2 years for 1st full service. which it reached in august 2019, was due to get rid april 2020 and got the car mid april 2017
The dealer vertu has been great on every occasion and i did ring Mb to check to make sure as every other car i had on the scheme had a yearly service or every 10/12k depends on the car and the Vw app would say service was due.
Seems your dealer though is different and should of checked the car, if you feel there is an issue. Sometime you gotta make it clear to them, you want it checking and there is an issue.
i dunno why but the auto hold would not release when stopped at traffic lights something to do with the acc and a software issue glitch, i believe as a software update flash ? cured it. It would rev but not go anywhere and you’d smell like a burning clutch smell. At first turning off the engine would cure it, but i found that hitting the AH button also worked.
It was not everytime it would happen and glad they fixed it, even though they couldn’t find or replicate the actual fault. I used to drive for a living and you know when something is not right also it would stick and make a noise when reversing like you say, turning it off when parking became normal.
As for the timing belt it should not need doing till alot higher millage unless there is a problem with it and if that is the case the dealer should be checking. after all it’s how they make money fixing stuff.
when i took it for the mot they did the rear brakes ( 1st set i ever had done on a mb car ) I think the ACC uses the brakes alot more than i would. but the dealer changed them and got Mb’s permission to do so..
I look at it like this, i lease the car and if something is wrong or it needs a service it is my duty to see that it is checked as that covers me for any issue that may arise from me not doing so. I even had to contact Mb after they extended because of lockdown to cover myself as it was then overdue a service again as they only did a normal oil cahnge at 3ok and needed servicing at 40/42k or a year.
Don’t ever let Service Depts palm you off, if they do contact Mb to cover yourself.. I pretty sure if you read the T&C’s of the scheme it’s our liability if we do not do so and something happens like the engine is destroyed.
I would get another Vw, but i decided to get a honda this time from the same vertu group.
September 16, 2020 at 8:20 pm #124006My car has the inspection and service warning on, it went in for mot in August (3yrs) and Seat contacted me saying Motability said don’t do it as the lease is going back soon
Contact Mb, and tell them the situtaion, it’s pretty standard for it not to have the 3rd service as we give it back. but if warnings are on then it’s due to the mileage and like in my case Mb said i could take it for a service but A few days later the new car was sorted and was no need, but they did say i could get it serviced no issue at all. As i wanted (as i said before) to cover myself, if anything was to happen and they MB was aware. So then they have to really as then they’d be liable. As we did plan to go to euro disney, but cancelled it in the end.
September 17, 2020 at 11:17 am #124036My KIA Caren’s (current car) was serviced at one year with 5,000 miles on the clock.
Don’t think they did anything to it other than check all the nuts and bolts were still tight.
I think the service went something like this… I turn up with car, they take the car around the back, out of sight from me while I wait, disconnect my cars cameras, sit down playing cards for an hour while drinking tea then after 90 minutes bring the car back around the front telling me the cars in good condition and all’s OK.
Service booked stamped and everything is fine for any future buyers of the car.😁
September 17, 2020 at 3:05 pm #124062Dave G@Rox, Goodness me, I have also the exact same vehicle, but a facelifted version, I am also starting to experience the same issues as you now with the Auto-hold function, the brakes stick on and as soon as you let go it sometimes either takes time to let go or it gives that kind of a launch control, very dangerous so I just turn it off! Useless piece of kit. See this is my first MB vehicle, and I also thought the same, why should timing belts need changing at 20K!
Thank goodness you’ve got rid of it! Now I am glad this lease is coming to an end, wish there was a way to complain about the overall vehicle experience but like you said, must be very careful as they can blame anything on us. Thanks for the advice!
September 18, 2020 at 11:04 am #124157Mine have always been serviced fully on the manufacturers std schedule, Grand Picasso every 16k right up to a full service 3 months before handover, 5 services total
S-Max has 18k service intervals, its had two services so far (just rolled past 40k) and the second one included the powershift box oil change/service. I’d expect a third service, but working from home until at least new year, maybe longer, so mileage probably won’t make it. I do over 500 miles a week on average, but only 2k total since lockdown began in March.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
September 19, 2020 at 1:55 am #124232Mine is a 68 plate/2 years old and been serviced every year and only done 11000 miles
September 19, 2020 at 7:49 am #124239Motability will service every vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer’s service schedule. To not do so would invalidate the warranty.
If a manufacturer states 30k between oils and there’s an issue, then it’s a warranty issue, not an issue of having such a high mileage between services.
That said, I personally wouldn’t let a car go that long but have you seen the cost of some of these oils? And I’m not talking £50 or £60 for 5 litres, some are double that.I’d certainly buy a Motability car if the price was right. Some are really abused, I know, but I’d wager, on average, they’re well cared for.
🏎 I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it 🏎
September 19, 2020 at 5:53 pm #124276It is German cars, especially cars from the VAG stable that have the longlife service schedules. My Toyota had all services include a Major one.
