As above, after last years hot hot hot days, I bought a 9000BTU portable air conditioner from Amazon a few weeks ago.
What a difference it has made. Its vented out the window, and the exhaust vent is hot, but it blows cold air inside. Well worth the £180.
Only put it on at 4pm to try it out, but it cooled the living room down very quickly and pulled half litre of water out of the room.
Highly Recommended.

Do you have a link for the one you bought, or the make and model?
Thanks.

These are cheaper when you dont need them, I bought mine mid April.
Its heavy and on castor for wheeling it about. They get pricey as Summer goes on. Leave it for 24 hours before switching on, if its transported on its side it needs to get rid of air bubbles.

Brilliant!
The way our weather is changing, we are going to use them more often.
Last year was the tipping point, rhe fans just did not keep up. The mobile air con unit works very well.
It soaks the heat out of a room surprisingly quickly.

New home’s should be mandatory, even if just the pipe work is installed and hidden behind a cover because its a pig to do otherwise, as I found out when we had ours installed, especially in the lounge where I would have liked 2 units due to its size. The lounge has a Daikin 5kW and the 2 bedrooms 2.5kW units. As said, I would have prefered two 2.5kW or 3.5kW units, but that was too difficult to acheive. The 12kW compressor inverter, is at side of house with lagged pipe running in conduit to loft and to each unit from there. Intalled 5 years or so ago and wasn’t overly expensive. It also works as an air to air heapump and heats, but I find it expensive to run compared to gas. Overall we find it a godsend in such weather and use it just for that.
May 27, 2026 at 6:29 pm #361669How easy is it to attach the window kit, will it fit any window type?

Patio door or sash window?
Other than that, just close the window onto it, the sides being open won’t have a negative effect or just push pipe through open window and close too.

May 27, 2026 at 7:27 pm #361686Bedroom window is a big un, the opening is 900cm x 700cm, it opens like a door for fire escape or from the top with hinge at the bottom and wider opening at the top, which is how we have it at night.

My idea woud be a sheet of perspex or similar the size of the window with a hole for the pipe, but really when you look around most just shove the pipe out the window.
There is also a box you can buy for vented tumble dryers, but is essentially a plastic box and lid with a whole for the pipe with some water in, which condenses the warm air 😉
When we get into autumn onwards get a quote for a compressor and wall mounted unit for a grand/£1200 or less fully installed. I have never looked back and money well spent imo.
Similarly, there are units that look like a storage heater and self install, just need to holes drilling outside, but overall won’t save you much. There are also self install traditional types that are pre gassed and not that difficult to install.
May 28, 2026 at 9:37 am #361698I used the window kit supplied. But is only really good for sash &case type windows.
I used the supplied plate and adjusted that to the bottom of the window. Which left 2 narrow angle pieces of old laminate flooring for the sides to block it off.
I attached a magnet to each of the triangular laminate plates. This keeps them held in place and a good enough fit.
I also bought a window kit from aliexpress ( £12) which is the zipper type and a supplied roll of velcro for attaching it to the frame and sash. Its similar to the screwfix link above, but the opening can be adjusted to any particular section of the fabric.

Nice one Marc. They all seem to be the same generic design and components.
It a bit of a faff initially setting it up, and getting used to it. But the rewards are huge when it gets really hot. They are noisy, but getting a bedroom temp down before going to bed is bliss.
