ParticipantI’m looking to paint the outside of my house this summer. I will need some temporary scaffolding and possibly a professional paint spray. I will be doing a trial area on my roughcast between me and my neighbour to see just how difficult it will be.
I can’t remember if I’ve posted about this before, somethings telling me I have, so if I have I apologize.
I am looking at using Emperor Paint, a sort of white but not bright white. The roughcast needs to have a softwash prior to paint being applied. This is to remove any moss etc attached to the wall.
Has anyone any experience if this type of work? If so any advice will be appreciated.

kezo
ParticipantA deep pile shaggy roller or a masonary paint brush!
If you spray it, even in the gentlest of breez, you run the risk of the fine paint droplets going everywhere.

ParticipantI think that’s the way to go Kezo but it’s so much easier to spray than roller or brush.
This job has taken a bit more urgency as I need to use the garage roof for the side wall and I need to paint before we get solar panels fitted as once fitted I will have little access from this roof so I would need to get scaffolders in at a lot of expense. The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

ParticipantIt won’t take long with a deep piled roller and brush! Also depending on your wall, you may need a fungicidal wash.
All done in the afternoon ready for tea 😂

ParticipantKezo I think the softwash has that included. Only the wall I’m trialling will need it as the rest are all fine.

ParticipantChop chop, it being over two months never mind 2 hours 🤣
Emperor paint is good, are you using their longlife silicone based paint?

ParticipantYes i think so, it’s a three-coat system with a silicon based primer then two top coats.
Pay no heed to the coverage rates of this stuff, 10 litre = 1 wall
Kezo you need to remember “Rome wasn’t built in a day”

Participant25-year guarantee, so they say, but only if you apply the primer.
To describe the primer its the consistency of milk so a bit of a nightmare to apply.

ParticipantWell this trial isn’t progressing any further. Painting roughcast is a pain in the ass. Didn’t manage to get the second coat applied as i ran out of paint. 10 litres should have covered between 50 and 80 m2 my area is 28m2 and i ran out. I need to get another 10 litres ordered to finish it off but that will be the end of it.
£330 to paint one roughcast wall 👎

ParticipantSpraying would be the best way, which will use alot less paint however, its not something I’d recommend you do yourself.
As for roughcast it, must be one if not the worse types of wall to paint.

ParticipantKezo this paint wouldn’t spray with anything less than a professional spray gun. So the trial is almost over, just need to make it look good even though nobody will see it 🤔

ParticipantJust had a look on their site for coverage rates/application etc
The easiest way to apply the paint is a combination of a masonry brush and a long-pile roller, although you can also use an airless spray machine. Emperor Masonry Paint is a two-coat paint which must be applied at 5-6m2 per litre on smooth surfaces, which can be reduced down to 2-3m2 per litre on rough, textured surfaces such as pebbledash. You can dilute your first coat of paint by 10% with water but do not dilute your second coat. While touch dry after 1-2 hours, it is crucial to allow 8 hours at 20°C

ParticipantThat’s me completed “The Trial” when i say completed i should say finished as the painting, as such, is not completed. Two 10litre tubs of Emporer finish coat applied to an approx 28m2 wall and it looks poor. I really should buy another, at least 5litre, but I’m knackered and i can’t be bothered paying any more money for this job 😪 All of the wall has had one coat but only 70% has had the second coat as i ran out of paint. The surface is patchy with many small areas of roughcast still visible.

Participantjust below 1.5l m2 opacity/coverage!
That is less than the manufacturer quotes! probably worth a call to them questioning opacity and hope they give you some, to finish the job at least.
In hindsight, perhaps it would have been better with a couple of initial coats of their normal masonary paint (watered down a touch) to get complete coverage and then 2 coats of the silicone paint, with a 5% watered down first coat.

ParticipantKezo I wasn’t aware they sold anything other than one masonary paint. The system i was going for, remembering i was looking to paint the entire house, included 25 year guarantee. To obtain this i needed to apply a primer coat then two coats of top coat. The first coat of top coat can be diluted by 10% but the top coat had to go on undiluted. The primer has no colour to it when dry so there is no help from that point of view.
It is highly unlikely Emporer Paint will offer me any additional paint to finish it off as we’ve had a couple of heated discussions already with no offer of any help.
