hi, we are new to the world of motability. my son has an entitlement starting on 4/4/26, we have an appointment with the dealership on 6th april. the car we are looking at has an advance payment, this money i would like to come from my sons account, however we have recently become his guardians and the money is tied up until the money management plans are approved, this is likely to be May sometime, fingers crossed. will this cause an issue (ive been told there is a 4-5 month wait on the vehicle) many thanks for any help

Pay the AP when the car arrives at the dealership and you are there to collect it.

Factory orders take about 12-16 weeks, so unless your getting a car already in the UK, you should have plenty of time to sort out with your son. As above pay AP when you collect.

Remember sign nowt-pay nowt-Dont enter pin- until you have thoroughly checked the car is what you ordered and has the extras you may have ordered. Then and only then, when your are satisfied that it is the car-model and spec you ordered, Sign and pay AP and enter your pin. Dont let them rush you.

On my last vehicle I went out to look over car everything was fine when I went back in to enter pin the salesman said it’s OK I’ve already done it, where did he get my pin number from.

While all the advice is how it should happen, if it’s a very large (typically over about £500) AP the dealer may want it a few days before.

Almost none take cash anymore due to money laundering requirements and some won’t take large sums on credit card / debit cards on the day.

Before you start the car application make sure you know the dealership policy on payments, and state very clearly, in writing, that any monies provided must be returned in full if you decide the not to take the car.

If your not happy with their policy, try another dealer.

                    As Djwheels suggests.

Some of the large chain garages request bank transfers 3 or 4 days before changeover day. They do not take credit or debit cards or cash.

The payment gies to an account the other side of the country, where their accountants office is located.

It just ensures you are able to take the car away on the day of changeover. Some do this, some do not. Better to check with the dealership beforehand.

Given the current high AP,s some are beyond the limit of my credit card anyway.
