There is a car in a motability auction sale tomorrow in England. It is a 1.0 Ford Ecosport registered 11/22 it has traveled 658 miles in 3 years. I understand people get sick and maybe can’t drive, but I think that is an awful waste of money for 3 years.

October 28, 2025 at 7:27 pm #316401Even at nil AP, that car has cost the customer almost £20 a mile to run. The desire to have a new car has clearly resulted in a complete loss of common sense, as I doubt that the customer had money to burn. If it was due to illness they could have done an early surrender after a few months, so I doubt it was that. The customer clearly did not need a car and should have taken the money instead.

you think I could walk 658 of them 🤭🤭🤭

Average taxi/private hire fare £1.20-£3.50 per mile!

I understand the sentiment, but I can’t help but feel that the customer in this case might have benefitted from a friend or family member helping them to fully understand the full costs of that comfort. All too often, including on this forum, people talk about the cost of their Motability car as being just the AP, less good condition bonus etc and seem to completely overlook the sacrificed benefits, which are a massive cost in comparison. I’m guessing that if this person had money to burn they wouldn’t have chosen a Ford Ecosport.
Also, with all the focus on Motability at present, and the noise about people having ‘free tax payer funded new cars that they don’t really need’, cars returned after 3 years with minuscule mileages such as this play right into the hands of these critics.
October 29, 2025 at 12:06 pm #316426My late friend Gary was a low mileage driver and before he gave up driving for good in 2020 after having his new car for 9 months he sadly passed in 2021 his sons said to him a few times over the previous 5 years maybe why don’t you give the car up.
he said to me it’s there if I need it anytime I want. I am ok financially so I rather have the car knowing it’s there.
I did put him in a petrol for the last car though as with his mileage getting lower I was concerned the Diesel would get DPF issues.

October 29, 2025 at 2:25 pm #316429I suggest they may have already been pushing their luck doing 658 miles with that wet belt set up 🙂
