Oh sorry mate had to pop out and forgot to come back and put an explanation.

The space within such cabinets is limited and typically allocated for specific usages by the distributor and energy supplier and therefore, should not be used to house other equipment.

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) issued guidance a good while ago now since the smart meter rollout.

“While the meter cabinet is the customer’s, it is a space designed for the use of electricity industry apparatus only and no allowance is made for additional equipment. For safety reasons, we would not recommend that any internal wiring, including a consumer unit, is installed within the cabinet.”

DNO’s also have their own guidance which is based given in their guidance EREC G87.

Typical DNO recommendation for space allocation within a meter box enclosure currently

ENA EREC G87 guidance on the installation of whole current metering equipment at the service position…

Advice has increased significance because of the smart meter rollout program, some modern meters and associated equipment can take up more space than the meters they replace. It is also becoming increasingly common for domestic premises to be provided with three-phase, to facilitate future developments in the supply of electricity.

If a DNO or MOP attends the premises to carry out work on their equipment and insufficient space is available within the meter enclosure, work will not be able to proceed. The customer will need to organise (at their expense) the removal of unrelated equipment to create the space needed for the work to be carried out.

NICEIC and other organisations strongly requests that electrical contractors do not install any other equipment within meter enclosures.

There are other reasons why you shouldn’t, such as excess heat build up, but I’ll reseve that for another day

The other reason is how Ohme calculates maximum demand on the owner survey, is also a route to disaster, as @MFillingham found out.

I hope this gives a broad insight to why not 🙂

Think the guy that came from ‘plug-in stations’ said they’ll put their stuff in a separate box underneath our electrical box outside.

Does that sound correct, or have I misunderstood him?

Our boxes are both on the wall outside, and the charger pod is going on the same wall  ~2 metres away.

The EV comsumer unit can go under or at the side of the meterbox but, not inside.

Ohme due to contact me Mon/Tue to arrange cable install

Been @/ringing trying to preempt and ensure that proper exterior data cable is sent prior to install date.

Beggars belief that Ohme never considered that the Easee cable didn’t have data connection within its dedicated supply cable and that another separate cable would therefore be needed when swapping the supply over to a Ohme charger.

Hope the next installer gets it right this time

If the wrong cable arrives before the install he is getting cancelled

I have heard of at least one other motorbility customer recently having had this done correctly

                        Fingers crossed

                          Super, thanks as always, Kezo!

That looks exactly how he described he intended to do mine, as the charger was going to be on the same wall as our boxes.

My dad was WL in the Navy, so knew his way around, and did all our stuff in the house outside specialist things, and I could just about change a lightbulb. Well, I could if I could get on a ladder lol…

My installer is here scratching his head as there is little room outside and can’t put things in the meter cupboard.

The cupboard. The plaster at the back was rubbish.

But looks like they have figured something out as they are putting a board on the wall to mount it to.

Meter cupboard is often refered to a cupboard inside the property. A meter box is usually situated on a external wall.

Yes three phase Its what my DNO. Installed when de-looping my supply from next door.

It would be better when energy suppliers actually have three phase domestic meters.

From May 2023, if you have a single rate 3 phase meter (i.e. not Economy 7 / 2-rate etc.) you will beable to book a smart meter appointment for a three phase meter installation.

You need to  live in an area covered by OVO 3 phase skilled engineers to have one. There aren’t many domestic three phase skilled engineers out there though.
